The GPS features of mobile devices have a million useful purposes, from finding your car in a shopping mall parking lot and getting driving directions to your destination, to getting the most up to date weather and even using it for amateur Astronomy. It never ceases to amaze me, the new ways we find to take advantage of this technology.
I know this isn't a GPS utility, but it uses the accelerometer among other features, so I figured this was the best place for it. Anyway, I built an over the toilet vanity this weekend and needed a level, but my tools are buried deep inside my closet and not very easy to reach. So, installing an app was the next logical step. This one is the most popular and I see why. It will let you calibrate for all 5 functional sides of your device, making it that much more accurate. It helped me accomplish my goal. With this app you can mark where you left your car in the parking lot, so that you can return to it later. No more lost vehicles and searching around endlessly. Images provided by: Created: 17 Aug 2011 00:02 |
With Google Maps suite of tools you can find just about any place you need. With various add-ons you can get voice-navigation (Navigation), points of interest with ratings (Places) and even track your friends and family members real-time (Latitude). As creepy as that may sound, it has its uses, especially for parents. Images provided by: Created: 16 Aug 2011 20:56 |
Here's another no-brainer. Your mobile device will have a GPS built into it, so Google Maps and their Street View application will help you find your way around. Images provided by: Created: 15 Aug 2011 05:27 |
Now, this is cool! It's like a compass on crack! Check your sensor data accuracy, position, signal strength of the satellites to which you're connecting. You can determine the accuracy, your speed, acceleration and your bearing. Find true north, magnetic north, use it as a level, mark locations for future reference and more. You can even reset the A-GPS on your device and update it's data for better accuracy. Images provided by: Created: 16 Aug 2011 21:32 |
Use this app to follow your path, wherever you go, whether it's running, driving, hiking or walking. The GPS will keep track of your route so that you can gather the time, speed, distance, and even elevation! It will also connect to external devices, such as heart rate monitors and more. This is a very cool app! Images provided by: Created: 16 Aug 2011 20:47 |
Okay, now this is a very unique game. It's a Real-Time Massive Multiplayer Online Location Based Role Playing Game. I guess that would make it a RTMMOLBRPG. How's that for an acronym? Basically, it's an RPG that superimposes a fantasy kingdom over top of your real world location. Now that is cool! Obviously, it needs your A-GPS to be turned on. This is a very neat app for runners. It will use your GPS to track your path, distance and time of your runs. So, that means you'll need to take your device with you when you go. That's obviously not convenient for tablets, but it will work well for phones. It used to be a commercial app, but it's free now. Images provided by: Created: 16 Aug 2011 18:49 |
It's not really a GPS app, of course, but it uses some of the physical components within your device, including the camera, to estimate the distance from you to another object. It can also guess the height. From what I can tell and others have tried, it's fairly accurate. It will do in a pinch, anyway. Images provided by: Created: 15 Sep 2011 02:17 |
You can set the widget to your home town, or have it move with you, as you travel, based on your GPS coordinates. I have one for traveling, one for my favourite vacation spot and one widget setup for travel. This widget gives you quick access to real-time weather changes with a beautiful graphical display.
