Description:
I bought my first router about 5 years ago, without very much research. I didn't realize then what a gem I had. It was a WRT54G, one of the most useful routers on the market, even now. The reason being that Linksys had released these routers with a Linux based firmware, meaning that they legally had to release the source code to the public. After trying to fight it, eventually they did and once the public got their hands on these routers experts realized that the router was far, far more powerful than the manufacturer had lead us to believe. There are now many flavours of after-market firmware available for routers, and the most widespread, user-friendly version is DD-WRT. It is the granddaddy of them all. At work we frequently flash misbehaving routers with this firmware to breathe new life into older equipment or better yet, add more power and features for customers who require it. This site is an emulator of that firmware, which as you can see is very reminiscent of the original Linksys firmware, but far more powerful. Check out DD-WRT.com for a router compatibility list and if you're looking for other firmware versions, you can always Google search OpenWRT, Tomato and a half dozen other firmware releases that offer other alternatives.
